Oklahoma County Resources During Teacher Walkout


Oklahoma County parents have a number of childcare resources to choose from, from free childcare, to paid educational courses and camp programs. There are also plenty of places feeding kiddos in Oklahoma County.



Childcare Resources


Coffee Creek Church in Edmond is offering a place for students during the walkout. I will update with further details as I have them.


Putnam City Christian Church will be offering care for children from 8am-5pm M-F during the walkouts. Breakfast, lunch, and one snack are included. Cost is $30/day. Please contact them at (405) 789-1247 to reserve a spot or if you have any questions..


The Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation Department will be extending their operating hours at the following nine recreation centers (which offer FREE access and will provide food) from 7:30am -8pm starting April 2 and lasting each weekday until the walkout ends, or until May 29 (when their summer programming begins). You should contact them with any questions.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County is offering a safe place for students, as well as meals and activities, to the children of members. They are hoping they will be able to offer membership to new families, but won't know if they can until they know how many current members need to utilize this service. Please watch their Facebook page for more details.

Memorial Park Club Site (3535 N. Western Ave. in Oklahoma City) will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the strike. Please call (405) 521-9292 to register your child to help ensure they have enough staff and supplies on hand.


Telstar Elementary Club Site (9521 NE 16th St. in Midwest City) will be open from 8am to 6pm during the walkout. Please call (405) 245-1371 to register your child to help ensure they have enough staff and supplies on hand. Please note: this location isn't sure they will have access to the school, but they are researching alternate locations. Please be sure to call ahead for location information.


Cesar Chavez Club Site (600 SE Grand Blvd in Oklahoma City) will be open from 8am to 6pm during the walkout. Please call (405) 245-1468 to register your child to help ensure they have enough staff and supplies on hand. Please note: this location isn't sure they will have access to the school, but they are researching alternate locations. Please be sure to call ahead for location information.


The Oklahoma City Zoo will be offering full-day camps during the week in the event of a walkout. These camps are meant for children ages 4-11. Advance registration and payment ($45 per child per day) required. Immunizations must be provided as well. Snacks will be provided, but all children must bring their own lunches. Drop off must be between 8:20am-8:30am and the camps are from 8:30am-5:15pm. For additional information or to register, call (405) 425-0218 or visit their website.


Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma will be offering a safe place throughout the walkout from 8:30am-4pm Monday through Friday for Kindergarten-5th grade girls from select schools. Girl Scouts in 6th-12th grade are invited to volunteer. Please contact them at (405) 528-4475 for more details and to make sure your child is eligible to attend.


You can also contact Rainbow Fleet at (405) 525-3111 for information on childcare locations that may have room for your child. They also have a childcare search function on their website at rainbowfleet.org.


The YMCA and the Metropolitan Library System are also discussing ways they can help.


Food Resources


The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is currently accepting donations and looking for volunteers to help pack food during the walkout.


Freedom Oklahoma will be collecting non-perishable food to distribute to children in need of meals, as well as hosting a sack lunch making program in their offices. They are also coordinating with agencies across the state, to ensure that families in smaller communities are not forgotten. Watch their Facebook page for more information.


Northeast Resource Center will be serving breakfast (10:30am - 11:30am), lunch (1:30pm - 2pm) and dinner (4:15pm - 5:15pm) at 1415 NE 23rd St. in Oklahoma City during the walkouts and will also provide some learning activities.
